The penitent stands before an icon of Christ while confessing to the priest, who acts as a witness and minister of God's forgiveness. The priest then covers the penitent's head with his epitrachelion (stole) and pronounces the prayer of absolution.

The German princess who became Russian Orthodox and was martyred by the Bolsheviks. Elisabeth founded a convent and hospital in Moscow after her husband's assassination. She was thrown into a mine shaft alive during the Russian Revolution. She represents conversion to Orthodoxy, charitable service, and martyrdom for faith.

A service of remembrance for the departed, asking for God's mercy on their souls and offering prayers for their eternal rest. Often called Panikhida in Slavic traditions, these services may be held at funerals, on memorial days, or on the anniversary of death. The service expresses the Orthodox belief in the communion of saints and our ongoing prayer relationship with the departed.

A devotional service of praise consisting of hymns sung while standing ("akathist" means "not sitting"). The most famous is the Akathist to the Theotokos, traditionally sung during the fifth Friday of Great Lent. Akathists can honor Christ, the Theotokos, or various saints. These services are deeply moving expressions of Orthodox hymnography and devotion.

Holy Unction is offered not only to the dying but to all who are sick in body or soul, and many parishes celebrate it communally during Great Lent. The beloved Russian hermit and mystic known for his joy and spiritual wisdom. Celebrated on January 2nd, Seraphim spent years in solitude before becoming a spiritual father to thousands. His greeting 'My joy!' and teaching that the purpose of Christian life is acquiring the Holy Spirit inspired countless believers. He represents the mystical tradition of Orthodox spirituality.

The sacrament of marriage, uniting a man and woman in lifelong union blessed by God. The Orthodox wedding service consists of two parts: the Betrothal (exchange of rings) and the Crowning (placement of crowns on the couple's heads). The crowns symbolize both the glory and martyrdom of marriage, as well as the couple's status as king and queen of their domestic church. The couple drinks from the common cup and processes around the analogion three times. Marriage is understood as an icon of Christ's union with the Church.

The fiery Old Testament prophet who defended monotheism against Baal worship and was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire. Celebrated on July 20th, Prophet Elijah represents zealous faith and God's power over false gods. His appearance at the Transfiguration alongside Moses shows his continued importance in Christian revelation.

The first saints canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, sons of St. Vladimir who chose martyrdom over civil war. Celebrated on July 24th, these 'Passion-Bearers' were murdered by their brother but refused to resist, following Christ's example of non-violence. They represent the choice of peace over power and Christ-like suffering.

The "falling asleep" and assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Preceded by a two-week fast, this feast on August 15th celebrates Mary's death and her bodily assumption. Orthodox theology teaches that Mary experienced death but was immediately raised and taken to heaven, where she intercedes for all Christians.
